NO FAIL TRUST® The Flight Plan to Cultivatinga High-Performance Team
Campbell Institute Forum — MonDay, Sept. 15
From Reactive to Proactive: Advancing EHS Performance Through Leading Indicators and ASTM Standards
10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
The Campbell Forum brings together EHS leaders and innovators for a critical conversation on transforming workplace safety strategies—from lagging metrics to proactive, prevention-focused approaches. This session explores the evolving role of ASTM standards in establishing Serious Incidents and Fatalities (SIFs) classification criteria and guiding the shift toward leading indicators for the practical steps organizations can take to embed prevention into the core of their EHS systems.
Attendees will gain insight into WHY the industry must prioritize prevention, HOW SIFs and pSIFs can be classified, HOW leading indicators can be implemented effectively, and WHAT impact this can have on preventing Serious Injuries and Fatalities SIFs. Learn from real-world examples and walk away with actionable strategies to lead your organization into a more predictive, resilient future.
Shaping the Future of SIF Prevention: Implementing Proposed ASTM Standards on Risk and Engagement
Serious Incidents and Fatalities (SIFs) remain a critical challenge across industries—and prevention starts with smarter prioritization and stronger engagement.
In this interactive Campbell Workshop, participants will explore two ASTM standards proposed by NSC:
A standard for risk prioritization and reduction to help organizations focus on what matters most
A standard for enabling employee and executive engagement to align leadership and frontline actions
Together, these proposed standards offer a powerful framework for building a proactive safety culture that targets SIF prevention at its core.
Attendees will gain insight into the standards' development, learn why they are vital to the future of safety, and leave with practical tools and implementation strategies to begin applying these concepts in their own organizations.
Evolving the Standard: Advancing SIF Prevention Through ASTM E2920
Join this hands-on Campbell Workshop for a deep dive into the ongoing transformation of ASTM E2920—the standard guide for identifying potential and actual serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs). As workplace safety expectations evolve, so too must the frameworks that guide them. This interactive session will explore how the 2920 standard is being updated to reflect a sharper focus on prevention.
Facilitated by experts involved in the standard’s development, the workshop will provide participants with:
A behind-the-scenes look at what’s changing and why
Practical tools and methods aligned with the updated standard
Real-world insights on how organizations are applying these principles to reduce SIF risk
Whether you're new to ASTM E2920 or actively using it, this session offers a collaborative space to explore how the standard can drive meaningful change—and save lives.
"The NSC Congress & Expo proved once again to be an excellent forum for networking with like-minded professionals from around the world. It provided invaluable opportunities for the showcasing of cutting-edge products and new developments in the safety arena. It was without a doubt time and money well spent!"

207: When Employees Speak Up: Lessons from a 15-Year Project to Engage People as a Source of Safety in Complex Systems
Nearly 20 years ago, we made two big assumptions. One: Direct employee intervention (speaking up) is indispensable to safety management because it’s impossible to “design” all risk out of work. Two: Granting people the authority to speak up would create that essential layer of protection. The first assumption proved correct. (Check out any recent book on HOP principles and methods.) The second assumption proved incomplete. By 2010, Stop Work Authority was widespread across many industries, so we conducted a study to determine whether people were actually using it. They were not. More often than not, they remained silent in critical moments. Those findings launched a 15-year project to research, design and test strategies for overcoming employees’ silence. This talk shares the lessons learned over the course of that project, and describes a three-part strategy that has helped organizations unlock their most powerful source of safety: their people.

209: Safety Technology Workshop: Practical Steps for Adoption, Implementation, and Building a Business Case for Innovation
The future of environmental, health and safety applications will be defined by innovations in technology. Work to Zero, a National Safety Council program, seeks to eliminate workplace fatalities by 2050 using these innovative technologies. However, organizations continue to face challenges in adoption, acquisition and implementation of safety technologies – as well as in building an effective business case to ensure stakeholder buy-in. Join us for an overview of currently available safety technologies and what may be on the horizon. We’ll also explore the Safety Innovation Journey, which outlines how to assess risk, identify technology solutions, determine readiness, make a business case, and design a roadmap for success. You’ll practice building an effective business case and leave with practical steps for implementing technology in your workplace.

211: Coaching: The Secret Power of Safety Leaders
Safety professionals love to fix and solve problems, often with a hands on approach, but what if that’s the worst choice you could make? Enabling the dependency of your shareholders, workforce and C-suite makes you work harder and keeps you behind obstacles instead of leading the way. What if you mastered the magic power of coaching and lifting others to problem solve on their own instead of asking you to fix their safety challenges? Coaching your workforce, team and executives is one of the most influential leaderships solutions available. Work smarter, not harder. In this seminar, you’ll learn how moving your thinking and actions forward using the knowledge, skills and abilities of those around you will make you a greater, more successful leader.

210: Making Sense of MSD Prevention Technologies: Practical Strategies for Selecting Effective Solutions
With the evolution of workplace safety technologies, safety and health professionals are inundated with technologies to reduce ergonomic risks in their workplace. However, not all safety technologies are created equal – and some may work better for some industries, risks or organizations than others. In many cases, the challenge isn’t the lack of innovation, but the lack of clarity about which tools genuinely work, for which risks and under what conditions.

212: EQ for Safety Leaders: The Human Skill Set Behind Every Safety System
Behind every effective safety system is a leader who knows how to connect. Technical knowledge and compliance can only go so far when the real work of safety happens in conversations such as coaching, feedback, and trust-building. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the skill set that turns technical experts into leaders people want to follow. In this interactive seminar, participants explore five EQ competencies that matter most in safety: self-awareness, self-regard, impulse control, empathy, and assertiveness. This workshop combines research with real-world stories and practical exercises. Participants will identify their own EQ strengths and triggers, practice emotionally intelligent communication under pressure, and build an action plan to strengthen influence, engagement, and accountability across teams. When safety professionals lead with emotional intelligence, they reduce friction, build credibility, and make it easier for others to do the right thing.

200: Risk Assessment Workshop
Hazard identification, assessment and control are foundational to many best practices – from OSHA to safety management systems. Assessing risks to worker safety and health is paramount to the prevention of injuries and illnesses. It’s also foundational to serious injury and fatality prevention strategies. Quantitative risk assessment is just one of the tools available. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to carry out assessments of risk associated with work tasks. Using observation of real work tasks as our “classroom,” we’ll dissect these tasks into their component parts, learn to evaluate exposure, detail injury types that could arise from such tasks, and quantify the likelihood and severity of each. You’ll be able to apply this risk assessment methodology at your workplace, enabling a method to prioritize safety concerns and adding a leading indicator to measure safety improvements beyond injury rate reduction.

203: Transforming SIF Prevention: Classification, Metrics, Risk and Leadership Engagement with theNew ASTM Standards
Preventing serious incidents and fatalities requires more than improving compliance or reducing minor injuries –it requires transforming how organizations identify, classify, prioritize and control the risks capable of causing the most serious harm. This seminar delivers an engagement-centered approach to SIF prevention based on the four new ASTM SIF prevention standards and the National Safety Council SIF Prevention Model. You’ll learn practical methods to consistently classify SIF injuries, illnesses, and incidents; modernize performance metrics beyond TRIR; and prioritize SIF risk and promote engagement for shared understanding. We’ll emphasize strengthening leader and worker engagement to recognize SIF risks, verify critical safeguards and build trust. This workshop blends targeted instruction with hands-on classification practice, risk-ranking exercises, and engagement-focused activities such as collaborative scenario discussions and operational learning techniques.

Defining
the Future
of Safety
The safety profession is at a pivotal juncture as rapid advances in AI, robotics and digital systems outpace traditional approaches rooted in compliance, injury rates and static controls. As organizations evolve into interconnected, technology‑driven environments where humans work alongside autonomous systems, even modern frameworks like Human and Organizational Performance may be insufficient for emerging risks posed by humanoids, algorithmic decision‑making and predictive analytics. This presentation examines how hybrid human‑machine workplaces will reshape control, failure pathways and governance—and asks whether safety can evolve quickly enough, or if a fundamental rethinking is required, to remain relevant in an accelerating world.
